Qingguo Alley

Qingguo Alley

Introduction

  • Formerly known as “Qianguo Alley,” Qingguo Alley is one of Changzhou’s ancient streets and lanes. First established prior to the 9th year of the Wanli reign in the Ming Dynasty (1581 AD), it boasts the reputation of “the Premier Celebrity Lane in Jiangnan” [1] [16]. Located in the south-central part of Changzhou’s old town, the alley is south of the ancient Grand Canal, stretching east from Zhengsu Alley to Jinling Middle Road in the west (directly connecting to the South Street Commercial Center) and north to Gucun (Ancient Village). The entire block is approximately 400 meters long from east to west and 200 meters wide from north to south, covering an area of about 8.7 hectares .
  • Predominantly featuring buildings from the Ming, Qing, and Republican periods, Qingguo Alley houses 1 World Cultural Heritage site, 3 National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units, 5 Provincial-Level Key Cultural Relic Protection Units, 6 Municipal-Level Key Cultural Relic Protection Units, and 39 General Immovable Cultural Relics. It is dotted with famous residences and former residences of celebrities, ancestral halls, temples, halls, bridges, archways, stone steles, woodlands, springs, verandas, pavilions, ancient wells, docks, opera houses, theaters, and schools. As a “living fossil” of Changzhou—a national historical and cultural city—it presents the street layout of “flanked by rivers north and south, with streets running east and west” and the Jiangnan charm of “ancient alleys winding through serene scenes, with residences adjacent to rivers” .

  • As a cradle of Changzhou’s cultural heritage, Qingguo Alley saw its literary tradition emerge in the Tang Dynasty. It was home to prominent aristocratic families, where a scholarly atmosphere permeated the alleys and literary elegance flowed along the adjacent river. Over the centuries, it has nurtured nearly a hundred successful candidates in imperial examinations and a large number of modern and contemporary celebrities, spanning fields such as politics, literature, art, education, industry, and science. For this reason, it is hailed as “the Premier Celebrity Lane in Jiangnan”.
