Changzhou City Comprehensive Museum
Introduction
- Founded in October 1958, Changzhou Museum is a local comprehensive museum integrating history, art, and nature. It is a National First-Class Museum and a National AAAA-Level Tourist Attraction. Located at No. 1288 Longcheng Avenue, Xinbei District, Changzhou City, the museum is adjacent to Changzhou Municipal People’s Government. Its curator is Lin Jian. The museum covers a total construction area of 28,000 square meters, with a building area of 19,863 square meters, including one basement floor, four above-ground floors, and three floors in some sections. The exhibition area is approximately 10,000 square meters, the storage and equipment rooms cover about 4,303 square meters, and the office space is around 5,560 square meters. In addition, 3,232 square meters of public corridors, academic lecture halls, and VIP reception rooms are shared by the two museums (Changzhou Museum and Changzhou Urban Planning Museum).
- On March 23, 2005, the construction project of the two museums (Changzhou Museum and Changzhou Urban Planning Museum) was approved; construction broke ground on May 26 of the same year, and the museums officially opened to the public on April 28, 2007. They have been open to the public free of charge since April 1, 2008. The permanent exhibitions include Dragon Soaring Over Zhongwu: Exhibition of Changzhou’s Ancient History and Culture, Magical Nature, Beautiful Homeland: Exhibition of Changzhou Museum’s Natural Resources, Xie Zhiliu Art Gallery, and Exhibition of Redwood Furniture Donated by Liu Guojun. Changzhou Museum houses over 30,000 pieces/sets of collections, including 59 National First-Class Cultural Relics (1 national treasure-level cultural relic), 321 National Second-Class Cultural Relics, and 3,616 National Third-Class Cultural Relics. It is home to China’s first and Jiangsu Province’s only Children’s Natural History Museum, which collects more than 10,000 pieces of various natural specimens, forming six major collection series: paleontological fossils, mineral crystals, birds and mammals, marine animals, high-quality insects from home and abroad, and regional Chinese medicinal herbs. Among them, a number of fossils and biological specimens such as Confuciusornis sanctus fossils, pleurotomaria shells, and golden snub-nosed monkeys are rare in the world.
- Changzhou Museum has successively won many honors, including the “National Most Innovative Museum” in 2016, Advanced Collective in the National Cultural System, Civilized Unit of Jiangsu Province, Excellent Museum of Jiangsu Province, Patriotic Education Base of Jiangsu Province, and Popular Science Education Base of Jiangsu Province.
